Pureed apples

I try to make sure that Z gets his portions of fruits and vegies every day, so I would always have pureed apples in the freezer. Here is how I cook the fruits:

Step 1:

Clean & core the apples and cut it into 4s (I don't peel the apples to retain more nutrients while steaming)

Step 2:

Steam the bowl of cut apples (covered) into the steamer for 10-15 minutes; at least until the fruit is fork tender.

Step 3:

When the apples are slightly cooled, I remove the skins (by now they could easily be taken off without much effort) and put the apples in my trusty food mill and puree away.

And that's it. It's as easy as ABC.

I usually get a lot of liquid when I steam the fruits. When Z was younger, I would mix the liquid (it's apple juice after all) with the pureed apples, but now I don't as Z is liking more texture in his meals.

I would store the apple puree in ice cube trays and would just pop them out whenever I need to use them. I would mix the apple puree with cereals, quinoa or oatmeal since they are super sweet on their own. And Z would usually finish off the food in record time - he has a sweet tooth like his mummy. :)

Here’s a simple recipe of one of Z’s first meals of apple puree with store bought rice cereal:

Yields : 1 (For a 6 month old child)

Ingredients:
1 oz of apple puree
1-2 tbsp of organic rice cereal
Apple juice (from steaming) or water

For frozen apple puree, I would re-steam them again before mixing it with the rice cereal. Add as much water as needed to gain the consistency that is suitable for your child.

Tip: I would usually go for organic Fuji & Gala for apples as they are sweeter and won't be too tart for Z.
