Here is my version of the 'peas porridge' in Z’s favourite nursery rhyme - brown rice porridge with green peas.

I use organic short grain brown rice for the porridge. Brown rice is basically white rice that has not had its bran coating removed. I choose brown rice because of its long list of nutritional values, i.e. it is an excellent source of fibre, magnesium, selenium, iron, Vitamin E and protein.

Here’s the recipe for the brown rice peas porridge:

Yields: 4 servings

Ingredients:
1/2 cup of organic short grain brown rice
1 1/2-3 cups of water (or as much as needed) for stove top cooking
1/2 cup of frozen organic green peas

Rinse the rice under tap water and transfer it to a small pot. Add in the water. Bring the pot into a boil keep it cooking under a rolling heat (medium to high heat) for the first 15-20 minutes, with plenty of water. And then, bring it down to a simmer for the last 5-10 minutes.

Stir and check constantly that water does not dry up before the rice is cooked. Add more water if necessary. Do so until the rice is cooked to the consistency that is suitable for your child. This will take around 20-30 minutes.

As for the green peas, you can either steam it separately or toss them in a few minutes the porridge is cooked.

The porridge has a nuttier taste and crunchier texture compared to white rice. It almost tastes like oatmeal. And the peas give a nice sweetness to the whole dish.

Z's verdict? I guess he likes it - the whole bowl of peas porridge is usually consumed without any hesitation on Z's side and his mummy can now add brown rice to her culinary repertoire.


Tip:
For an alternative and faster way of cooking, use a rice cooker instead. Just follow the water indication level for your rice cooker.
