IT all begins with a meteorite from outer space that comes hurtling down from the sky one day. The giant space rock crashes on a young Californian woman, Susan Murphy (voiced by Witherspoon). Until then, she was a very ordinary girl about to get married to her conceited boyfriend — clearly a wrong choice — and end up as another loser in life.
Murphy's boyfriend Derek Dietl (Paul Rudd) works as a TV weatherman who thinks only about his career and nothing else.
It turns out that the ''space accident'' is a blessing for Murphy even though it transforms her into a ''monster''.
Government forces quickly corner her and abduct Murphy. However, unlike other extra terrestrial movies of this nature, they have a special mission for the young lady.
They team her up with other secret monsters in their possession to fight against aliens that threaten Earth's destruction.
This science fiction animated movie drew mix reactions from me. The 3D cartoon images were extraordinary in that it looked almost like the real thing, especially the inanimate objects compared to the human characters.
However, I had trouble appreciating the movie itself. At times it appeared like a flick that was meant for the young ones rather than mature audiences. Even Witherspoon did not come out forcefully enough with her vocals.
The DVD has subtitles in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Bahasa Indonesia. There is also a filmmaker's commentary plus a segment on the making of the movie. - Review by ANTHONY THANASAYAN
